Many entries in School Log Books say much about the state of the local economy, as in this reference to vanishing jobs for quarrymen in the local slate quarries in 1882.

This entry from the Derwenlas School Log Book for October 13th, 1882, reads as follows:
"Oct 13th. One Scholar has left the School this week owing to the removal of his family from the district. The numerous removals from this neighbourhood has caused a very marked decrease of Scholars at school. The cause of these removals appears to be the lack of employment for the labouring quarrymen who formerly formed an integral portion of the pop. [population] of this Parish."
