A reminder of rural poverty
The extract below from the Derwenlas School Log Books serves as a dramatic reminder of the fragile nature of the rural economy in the early years of the village school.
The reference to school fees paid by 'non-paupers' highlights the fact that some of the children would be from near-destitute families of the district in receipt of help from the Machynlleth Poor Law Union.

School log book extract 
  The relevant portion of this extract, dated 13th October 1886, reads:
"The form for Non-paupers school fees was sent from the Relieving Officer of the Machynlleth Union to be filled up for the last two quarters."
