The Derwenlas School Log Book of 1964 tells of the worst flood of all in the history of the little riverside school.

These extracts read as follows:
"On the night of Dec 12th disastrous floods swept the village of Derwenlas. Most of the homes were flooded, the Methodist Chapel and the School was flooded to a depth of over 5 1/2 feet. The flood water rose very quickly sweeping everything before it .... All the Stock and Apparatus in School is ruined, Cupboards, piano, refrigerator all under water and when the floods subsided it left a heavy coating of slime. Roads were impassable..."
