Derwenlas School 7
The icy hand of death

  One of our small number
The brief history of the village school at Derwenlas, as recorded in the School Log Books, includes this very moving little tribute to mark the death in 1916 of one of their pupils, a little boy aged just six years.

School log book entry

This black-bordered entry was made on 11th October 1916, and reads:
"Death having laid its icy hand on one of our small number viz little David Evans - age 6, we remain now only 22. The child was in School less than a week before his death, which we very much feel."

The school was closed a few days later so that all the remaining children could say goodbye to their friend at his funeral.
