Llangurig School 14
A peep at Mr Gladstone

  Time off for teacher
Amongst the many complaints in School Log Books about the absence of children from school, there are also occasional references to reasons for the absence of teachers. This is usually due to illness, but the two shown here are more unusual !

School log book entry
The above entry in the school log book was dated 3rd June,1887 and reads:
"A Half-day holiday was given on Thursday afternoon that the Teacher might go to Llanidloes to have a peep at Mr Gladstone. I went, and had the satisfaction of not only seeing him but of hearing him".
William Gladstone, who had been the British Prime Minister for a number of years before this, was out of office at this time, but was to be re-elected again at a later date.

The entry above is for 23rd October,1891:
"Anticipating a small attendance on Wednesday the date of the Llangurig Sheep Dog Trials and Trotting Matches I gave a holiday. I also felt an inclination to witness them myself".
This seems to be a case of "if you can't beat them, join them" !
