Saluting the flag in 1914

  Marching on Empire Day
A special programme of events was carried out in most British schools over many years to mark 'Empire Day'.
The extract from the School Log Books of the Llanidloes National School shown below gives a good idea of the nature of these occasions.

This was written on 22nd May 1914, and reads:
"5. Address: Patriotism.
6. Song: Land of My Fathers.
7. The children will here march into the school yard for Drill. The National Flag will be unfurled on Flag-pole just erected on School. The children will march past saluting the Flag and singing "Up with the Old Flag" and then return marching into School".
