  Going to the fair
As mentioned on the previous page, it is usual to find lots of references in the School Log Books to local diversions which kept children from school.
A comment in the book from October 1879 noted that "The attendance is still low and more irregular than ever. Some of the causes are "working in the harvest" and "getting up potatoes".
It is less usual to find so many listed together as in the example shown here.

This sequence of log book entries cover the period from 13th September to 6th October 1899, and reads:
"Sept 13 - Holiday - Church Harvest Festival
Sept
18 - Holiday - Sheep Fair
Oct 4 - Holiday - Church Bazaar
Oct 6 - Holiday - Sheep Fair"

Another earlier entry, shown below, refers to the Horse Fair, and notes the risk to the children of streets full of horses.

School log book entry 
 

This was written on 19th October 1893, and reads:
"Horse Fair - Marked Registers at 9 and 11 in order that children should not go out when street was filled with horses viz 10 to 12.30."
