Fever raging fearfully 

  Great sickness prevails
As can be seen from the School Log Book records from other communities covered by our website, illness was a constant threat to schools in the early days of formal education. Darowen School was no exception.

  The above entry was written on 19th March,1886 and reads:
"The attendance this week was considerably below the Average owing to the great sickness that prevails through the Parish".

This comment in the Darowen School log book was written on 7th April,1871 and reads:
"Scarlet fever raging fearfully. Attendance very low".
These epidemics sometimes had tragic results, as can be seen on the next page.
