Empire Day was observed in almost all British schools in the
way referred to above in this entry from 25th May 1917, though
the occasion clearly took on a greater significance during times
of war. The entry reads:
"Empire Day was observed (24th inst) in the School. Patriotic
songs were sung, children marched and saluted the flag. Every
child got an Union Jack badge, proceeds from which were given
to fund for wounded and blinded soldiers".
