Llanidloes National School - Infants 9
Helping wounded soldiers

  Empire Day
Every community in the land was affected by the terrible sacrifices of the Great War of 1914-18, and almost all School Log Books include references to it. Many schoolchildren took part in fund-raising activities to help the casualties of the war.

School log book entry.

Empire Day was observed in almost all British schools in the way referred to above in this entry from 25th May 1917, though the occasion clearly took on a greater significance during times of war. The entry reads:
"Empire Day was observed (24th inst) in the School. Patriotic songs were sung, children marched and saluted the flag. Every child got an Union Jack badge, proceeds from which were given to fund for wounded and blinded soldiers".
