Desperate measures

Miners on strike
During the miner's strike of 1921 attempts were made to provide food for the children of the striking miners at the local school. The meals given to the children are recorded in the following extract from the School Log Books.

The extract reads:-
"Six school-children were fed in the school today by the Canteen Committee of the Local Distress Committee. Bread and butter and tea formed the morning meal, bread and butter for dinner, and bread and butter for tea. The headmaster supervised the mid-day meal".

The very limited nature of the diet provided is probably an indication of how desperate parents must have been to be in need of such help during these difficult times.
