Serving a growing community
As at Coelbren School, new developments in local industries brought in a new workforce which expanded the local community and led to a need for a school in the locality.

Caehopkin around 1890

The above map shows the area around 1890 before the community developed and the school opened. Although Abercraf Colliery is open next to the Neath and Brecon Railway, there is little else in the area apart from a scatter of farms and holdings with Abercraf itself just a small hamlet at the top of the map by the River Tawe.
To compare this with the area around 1920 visit Caehopkin School 8
