Victorian Hay
  Hay and the Wye Valley

The border town Hay-on-Wye was an important market centre for the communities of the Wye valley in both Radnorshire and Breconshire.

Like Builth and Rhayader it grew up at an important crossing place over the river. It also played an important role as a border town on a major route in England.
Like all these other communities it saw its share of changes in the Victorian period.

Education brought new opportunities for children, giving them skills which would open up new opportunities for them.

Transport improvements linked the area with the changing world beyond the valley, bringing new prospects for trade and travel.
