See how much changed in the communities of
mid-Wales during the lon
g reign of Queen Victoria.

The Victorian period in Britain, from 1837 to 1901, was a time of great progress which
changed many people's lives in different ways.
This project will show how these changes affected many Powys communities.

Some important topics

Our website covers some of
the local history of
18 communities from the three former counties of Montgomeryshire, Radnorshire and Breconshire, including the local district around each town.

There were lots of new inventions, new machinery, and a huge growth in the system of canals, railways and roads. Our website also covers topics like care of the poor, schools, and crime and punishment.

Background information for teachers

The content of this website for primary schools was placed online over a two year period which ended in March 2002. Information for primary school teachers on how to make best use of this resource will be provided.

Our first Powys Digital History Project of 1998-99 covered six of these communities and included content from earlier and later dates than this Victorian site. It also has links to earlier pilot projects to put archive material online. Use the link below for this site.
