Llawryglyn Board School 8 The lighter side of school life
School treats Although it is the hardship and difficulties faced
by pupils in the scattered village schools which makes most impression
on the modern reader, there were plenty of lighter, happier occasions
recorded in the School Log Books also, as this entry below
from April 1895 shows.

The entry reads:-
"Annual school treat on Wednesday afternoon @ 3pm. Public
distribution of Prizes with Songs, Recitations etc. by the scholars
at 6.30pm. Head Teacher gave a Lantern Treat to the scholars
on Thursday evening at 7.30pm."
Some of the activities would seem very strange to the staff
and children at today's Primary Schools in Montgomeryshire.
The entry reads:-
"Practised light pole drill and gun drill with sticks
cut and prepared by the scholars. Taught a vocal waltz to accompany
the same."
As in most rural areas in the early days of state education,
the local gentry were often very supportive of local schools
and their charges funding scholarships and prizes, and providing
"treats" as recorded below, when David Davies of Llandinam,
the local MP, organised a special Empire Day celebration for
many local schools in the grounds at Llandinam.

"Offer of a Treat for Standard scholars from D. Davies
Esq. MP on "Empire Day" at Llandinam. Agricultural
waggon and three horses hired to take the scholars to Llanidloes
station. Scholars drew a map of India and wrote out an essay
on the same in preparation of competition on the above date."
