Victorian Llanidloes
Llanidloes and the Upper Severn Valley

Llanidloes and the Upper Severn Valley, like all the areas of Powys on our website for primary schools, saw enormous changes during the long reign of Queen Victoria.
Education brought new opportunities for children, but had difficulty in getting established
Transport improvements linked the area with the changing world beyond Montgomeryshire, bringing new prospects for trade and travel.
The flannel and lead-mining industries expanded quickly and then declined, offering local people a chance for employment but leaving problems in their wake.
The pressure for a fairer deal for ordinary people sparked into violence in the Chartist riots.
