Llanidloes
An early railway accident
A train crash at Tylwch in 1899

There was a tragic railway accident in 1899 at Tylwch, which is to the south of Llanidloes and close to the border between Montgomeryshire and Radnorshire.
The crash happened near the old railway station at Tylwch, which was on the road from Llanidloes to Rhayader.

The railway station at Tylwch
is shown on this section of a
1904 map.
The road at the top of the
map goes to Llanidloes, and
the road at the bottom near
Rock Cottage goes to Rhayader.
The River Dulas is shown in blue.

The railway line has now been closed for years. The old railway station building is now a private house, and Tylwch is now a peaceful little community situated in a very attractive valley, but over a hundred years ago it was the scene of one of the early disasters which occasionally happened with the huge growth in the railway network during the Victorian age.
