As the School Log Books show, the visit of the circuit judge to Presteigne, as mentioned on the previous page, was just one of many distractions which caused the master some concern.

"A great many absent in the afternoon owing to the ‘shows’ that have arrived for the May Fair To morrow: I must say that the children attend very irregularly here - the least thing seems to prevent them from coming - too often it is the parents’ fault as much as the Children’s."
