  Suspected to plunder coal
Another example of the suspicion with which some local people were regarded is evident in the extract below from the Police Journal kept by a local constable in Montgomeryshire.

This entry, dated 31st January 1844, reads as follows:
"I went to the House of a Elizabeth Evans on the teskin. I loocked it all over, thare is about 15 in family on them and the[y] are Suspected to Plunder Coal or Potatas or any thing the[y] can com a cross..
My intention was to keep fear on them. I stoped in that nabourhood for Som hours."
