Bywyd ysgol
Y merched na fedrai wneud symiau
Roedd dysgu yn y mwyafrif o ysgolion oes Fictoria yn canolbwyntio ar bynciau elfennol "Elementary subjects" sef darllen, ysgrifennu ac arithmetic.
Nodwyd daearyddiaeth, hanes, gramadeg a rhai eraill fel pynciau ychwanegol "Extra subjects", a byddai gwaith gwnïo a gweu fel arfer yn cael eu dysgu i ferched a darlunio i’r bechgyn.
Nodwyd barn Arolygwyr Ysgol ar y modd y cafodd amrywiol bynciau eu dysgu yn y Llyfr Cofnod bob blwyddyn. Dyma ran o adroddiad 1884 ar Ysgol Genedlaethol y Merched Aberhonddu...
"Thomas & Ellen Jones in the Infant Class seem to learn nothing at all. I cannot get them to speak a word beyond "Yes" and "No".

School diary entry "The Arithmetic in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth standards was with five exceptions a total failure, the 19 other girls had not a single sum worked out correctly. The Handwriting was also poor. The Elementary Subjects require the most careful attention this year".

Roedd adroddiadau swyddogol yr Arolygydd Ysgol yn aml yn feirniadol o waith yr athrawon. Ond byddai athrawon yn eu tro yn ysgrifennu weithiau am y problemau a gafwyd wrth geisio gael rhai o’r plant llai galluog i ddysgu eu gwersi.
Mae’r enghraifft yma o Ysgol Senni yn 1894...

"Janet Powell seems extremely stupid, she has no idea of putting down or working a sum, and she cannot spell a simple word of three letters".

"Week ending March 3rd : The boy William Price, admitted last week, is in a deplorable state. He has not the slightest idea how to spell the simplest word. He says he has never done any drawing and it appears to me he has done very little of anything"...
Mae nifer o enghreifftiau mewn Llyfrau Cofnod ysgolion o blant yn dechrau ysgol yn 10 mlwydd oed neu hyn, ond nid oeddynt "do not know their letters".
