  Eu hangen yng nghaeau’r cynhaeaf
Boys at haymaking

Heblaw am salwch, y prif reswm dros absenoldeb o’r ysgol oedd bod gwaith i’w wneud mewn gwahanol dymhorau ar y ffermydd a thyddynnod.
Roedd rhieni angen help gan eu plant hyn gyda’r cynhaeaf, cneifio, plannu tatws a gwaith eraill ac nid oedd llawer yn gallu fforddio cyflogi gweithwyr eraill.
Gelwid gwyliau’r haf yn 'gwyliau’r cynhaeaf' am nifer o flynyddoedd ac roedd eu hamseriad yn dibynnu ar y tywydd. Mae hwn o Lyfr Cofnod Ysgol Llanfrynach yn 1866...

"The parents of many of the children are of the opinion that one quarter a year is quite sufficient, hence at the end of the first quarter many of the children were taken away some to labour on the farms etc, and probably they will return next winter".

School diary entry "Weather very warm - capital weather for haymaking, and consequently producing a small attendance".
Mae’r darn nesaf o ddyddiadur Ysgol Castell Madog yn 1894 yn sôn am absenoldeb y bechgyn hynaf a’r merched iau...

School diary entry "Re-opened school on Monday with a very poor attendance, and it has continued so through the week. The reason is, the elder children are wanted in the harvest fields, especially the boys, and the little girls help their mothers in the house".
Mae darn arall o Ysgol Llanfrynach yn 1892 yn dangos bod y cynhaeaf yn parhau i gymryd blaenoriaeth dros wersi ysgol...

School diary entry "Absentees are coming back by twos and threes as harvest operations are finished on the different farms".

Ar 8fed Medi 1893 nodwyd yn nyddiadur Ysgol Senni -
"This being the first week after the holidays the attendance has been wretched in the extreme. Of course under such circumstances the progress is practically nil".
