Gough's buildings
  Old Ystradgynlais

At the beginning of the 19th century the Gough family built a network of houses for workers in the Ironworks and coal pits. They were built on a strip of land like an island between the Swansea Canal and the River Tawe,
By looking at old maps and photographs we can get a glimpse of what Victorian Ystradgynlais must have been like.

The first stages
New houses for the workers
Along the canal
New developments at the North end of the "island"
Oddfellows and Pelican Streets
A community of working people
Water Street and the Square
