Llandrindod parish was a rural parish stretching from the edge of Howy village to the Arlais brook (by the Autopalace). Until the late 1860s there was no town of Llandrindod Wells here. Even when the town was built most of it stood in Cefnllys parish.
The government report which published the 1841 census figures said that the figure for Llandrindod included "34 visitors for the benefit of the mineral waters". This shows that there were people taking the waters even before there was a town here. (For more on the development of the spa, click here)
