Again the local specialities are reflected in the entries in this Trade Directory. The short list of slate proprietors probably represents a fraction of the men involved in the local slate quarrying industry.
Local lime kilns were active all over England and Wales at this time, providing lime both for agricultural purposes and for mortar for the construction industry.

The presence of at least four tallow chandlers in a small rural town reminds us of the importance of candles for light indoors for many months of the year.
In poorer households the cheaper taper would have been more common, and many people simply went to bed when it became dark.
