Llanidloes
Crime and punishment
  An arrest on Christmas Day

Even on Christmas Day 1845 Constables Jones and Owen were out on the beat in Llanidloes. By the Long Bridge they noticed something suspicious.
PC Jones' Journal explains what happened.

  extract from Journal

Hard labourThe extract reads:
Found Thomas Humphres, taylor of this town by the longbridge consealing [concealing] a peas [piece] of timber - took timber in Posion [possession]. We suspected the timber belong[ed] to Mrs Jervis of Brynllis.

As you can see, PC Jones had trouble with his spelling !
It turned out that Thomas Humphreys had indeed stolen the wood from Mrs Jervis. He was brought to court on the 8th January 1846 and sentenced to nine months hard labour in the
County Gaol at Montgomery.
