Llanfair Caereinion
Victorian school days
What do you want books for ?

In 1875 the School Inspectors discovered that there was no money at all allocated in the accounts for buying books, paper or fuel for Manafon School !

15th January
1875

The Inspector's Report in the Log Book reads -
"My Lords are surprised that the only Item of Expenditure should be the Master's Salary, and that there should be no Expenses on account of Repairs, Fuel, Books and Stationery. If the explanation is that the Master has to provide all expenses out of his Salary, their Lordships do not approve of the arrangement which should be discontinued".
It wouldn't be surprising if schools were in a bad state of repair, or short of books and equipment, if the teachers had to pay for them ! Victorian teachers didn't get paid very much...

The Master's salary goes up and down...
