Local tradesmen in 1835: skinners to tanners

Here is a further extract from Pigot's Directory showing us some of the tradesmen who were busy in the area in the early years of Queen Victoria's reign.
The skinners and the tanners were both involved in the production of leather. The skinner was the man who skinned the animals and prepared the skins for tanning.

extract from Pigot's Directory
The tanner was the man who turned the raw skins into leather. (like the two in the picture).
This was a very smelly process, so not many people would want to live next door to the tannery !
