In Victorian times
Cattle and carriages in Broad Street

This picture was probably taken a few years into the Edwardian age, around 1910, but shows a scene common to many market towns during the Victorian years.
This was Broad Street in Hay, photographed on a market day before a livestock market was built for the town. You can see the cattle herded together at the side of the road on the left, leaving space in the roadway for carriages and carts.

The view above is looking south along Broad Street towards the Broad StreetClock Tower.

The recent picture shown on the right was taken from a similar position to the market day view. Fortunately for the local people a proper cattle market is now provided on the southern side of the town !
