The photograph shown below of the tragic rail crash at Tylwch railway station in September 1899 shows the very rugged nature of the landscape on the southern border of Montgomeryshire.

The Manchester bound excursion train can be seen in the foreground, after the head-on collision with the engine and wagons of the mail train. The station at Tylwch can just be seen behind the trees on the left in this view of the aftermath of the accident.
