A view of Llanidloes, 1812
Not very inviting

  Very few good houses
The entry below is from a traveller's Guidebook, "Beauties of England and Wales", published in 1812. Many early books of this type tended to be fairly down to earth in their accounts of people and places, and did not have much in common with the tourist guides and advertising of today.

Guide book entry, 1812
The writer of this extract did the town few favours at the time, since he saw the approach to the town as uninviting, the houses of poor quality, and the streets unsanitory!
The same entry describes the now much admired market hall in the centre of Llanidloes as "a mean, low building, constructed of the same materials and in a similar manner to most of the dwelling houses".
