'Out of repair' in 1776

  A plea from the Keeper of the County Gaol
Another among many references to the bad state of repair of the old county gaols of Powys among the records of the Quarter Sessions is shown here. This concerns the Radnorshire County Gaol at Presteigne, which was officially declared to be in 'ruinous condition' in 1776.

This document from the Session Rolls of the Radnorshire Quarter Sessions reads as follows:
"I John Thomas Keeper of the County Goal [gaol] at Presteigne Do Present that the said Goal is out of repair and in ruinous condition. Dated the 17th Day of April 1776.
John Thomas"
