Handcuffs and chains

  Chaining up the prisoners
Another example of the measures taken by the authorities to prevent the escape of prisoners from early gaols, which were often in a very poor state of repair, is shown here.
This order from the Quarter Sessions records of 1785 authorises the purchase of handcuffs and chains to secure the prisoners in Brecon county gaol.

This extract from the Order Books of the Breconshire Quarter Sessions reads as follows:
"Ordered that six Chains for securing the Prisoners in the Cells and Six Handcuffs be provided under the directions of the Treasurer for the use of the Gaol."
