Buildings alongside the canal

The first picture belowCanal wharf at Llanfoist shows the warehouse and wharf at Llanfoist.

Almost all of the wharves had limekilns nearby.
In Breconshire lime was used by farmers for fertiliser and by builders to make mortar.

  Limekilns near Brecon

These are some surviving limekilns near Brecon. There were often local stories of tramps and other people sleeping by the kilns for their warmth. Unfortunately some were occasionally overcome by the dangerous fumes and died.
