The Brecon and
Abergavenny Canal
What was made at the foundries ?
Iron was produced from iron ore (or iron stone) in foundries located along the canal. The foundries which used the Brecon and Abergavenny canal include a works at Llanelli called the Clydach Iron works.
The document shown below is from the description of the Iron Works when it closed down and was put up for sale.

There was also an ironworks at Glangrwyney where a forge worked pig iron brought in by tramroad from Ebbw Vale.

Iron ore had to be heated in a furnace to very high temperatures until the iron in the rocks melted and ran out. This process was called smelting. The iron which poured out of the furnace was called pig iron.
