The Brecon and
Abergavenny Canal

The loss of trade on the canal...

Both the trade in iron and coal was lost by the 1860's to the railways, which was a much more popular and cheaper method of transport. As a result of this decline in business, the Brecon and Abergavenny Canal Company was put up for sale.

The canal was bought on 29 September 1865 by the Monmouthshire Railway and Canal Company.

By 1881 the wharf in Brecon was closed and filled in. By the end of the nineteenth century only one boat used the entire length of the canal.
The very last toll for using the canal was collected in February 1933 at Llanfrynach.
