The Brecon and
Abergavenny Canal
  Cutting the cost of coal
One of the main aims of the canal was to lower the price of coal and lime at Brecon by making the transport costs cheaper.
By 1800 the first boat load of coal had reached Brecon from the Gelli-Felen colliery and the price of coal had been reduced from 14 pence per cwt (about 6 pence for 50 kilograms) to 9 pence (about 4 pence).
The following extract is from a trade directory dated 1849.

In 1865 the canal was bought by the MonmouthshirePhoto of canal Railway and Canal Company, and in 1880 was taken over by the Great Western Railway after which it gradually fell into decline.
The section between Brecon and Abergavenny has recently been fully restored.

A recent view of the canal is shown here.
