Why was the canal built near coal mines ?
The canal was built near a number of collieries or coal mines, some of which were based at Llanelli and Crickhowell. These were connected to the canal by tramroads on which horses pulled carts loaded with coal. These were an early version of the railways which came later.
In its heyday the Brecon and Abergavenny canal carried over 30,000 tons of coal and coke. Coal was used in houses and for lime burning, and coke for iron smelting. |
