The Brecon and
Abergavenny Canal
When was the canal built ?
In 1793 an Act of Parliament was passed... "for making and maintaining a navigable canal from the town of Brecknock to the Monmouthshire Canal, near the town of Pontypool, in the county of Monmouth, and for making and maintaining railways and stone roads from such canal to several ironworks and mines in the counties of Brecknock and Monmouth".

Part of Act of Parliament

This is taken from part of the original Act which allowed the canal to be built.

The Brecon and Abergavenny Canal Company opened its canal in 1800 between Brecon and Gilwern. The southwards section to Pontypool was completed in 1812 and connected with the Monmouthshire Canal.

It quickly proved to be a very important communication link between Brecon and South Wales, carrying agricultural produce, coal, limestone, iron ore and iron.
