During Victorian times the canal was used by people for boating and punting, especially during the summer. This picture shows a small boat on Small boat on the canalthe Brecon and Abergavenny canal just below Brecon around 1900.

In the 1793 Brecon Canal Act it was specified that pleasure boats were not to be more than 5 feet (about 1.5 metres) wide, and not more than twelve feet (about 3.5 metres) long. They were not to be charged a toll for using the canal, but were not allowed to pass through the locks.
