In Victorian times most of the people of Whitton parish would have been involved in farming or working on the land in some way. Even so there would have been local craftsmen like tailors and shoemakers providing a much-needed service to the community.
The government report which published the figures for the 1871 census said that the population had dropped due to "migration in search of employment". This shows that people were struggling to make ends meet in this rural parish.
