The workhouse
The entry above from
the workhouse record book, which is not very clear, reads:
Archibald
Robertson - Llanfyllin workhouse
Archibald
Robertson was 30 in 1891, and was described as being a lunatic.
Many people with mental illness ended up in the workhouse as there was no
other means of caring for them.
Property was often taken away and sold in an attempt to recover some of
the costs of an inmate’s upkeep.Lunatic
- a
term once used to describe a person with a mental illness.
"Archibald
Robertson, Workhouse
The master reported that this man was possessed of some furniture which
were stored at Pendre Mill. Resolved that the master be directed to cause
the furniture referred to to be removed to the workhouse."
