The workhouse
  Rhayader Union workhouse
Glossary

The workhouse at Rhayader was built in 1870 at a cost of £4,000. It was able to house 50 inmates.
After 1834 some Unions were reluctant to build a workhouse since they often believed that it was cheaper to continue paying poor relief to those that needed it instead of trying to run a workhouse.

The workhouse was run by a Board of Guardians. Here are the people on the Rhayader Board of Guardians at the beginning of the century.
