The workhouse
  John Perkins - Llanfyllin workhouse
On the 1891 census John Perkins was only 13 and was probably an orphan.
Towards the end of the nineteenth century children with no parents were often fostered out to families who would look after them.
By 1908 children were no longer put into workhouses.

Orphan - a child without parents.
