The workhouse
Orphan -
a child without parents. This
entry from the workhouse record book says:

Perkins - Llanfyllin workhouse
On
the 1891 census John Perkins
was only 13 and was probably an orphan.
Towards the end of the nineteenth century children with no parents were
often fostered out to families who would look after them.
By 1908 children were no longer put
into workhouses.

The Master reported that his boy had absconded for one day during the
last fortnight, and the lad was called before the Board and reprimanded,
and the costs of his apprehension amounting to 3s 3d were ordered to be
paid."
