The workhouse
  Hay Union workhouse

The workhouse in Hay was built in 1837 with about four acres of land. It was able to hold about 71 inmates.

At first it was thought to be of a high standard, but during the 1860s the Board of Guardians was accused of ill-treating the inmates.
