The workhouse

The Board of Guardians at Builth thought that the poor were best looked after by a system called 'Outdoor Relief'. This meant that money was paid directly to families who probably lived at home.

  A workhouse was eventually built just south of the town in 1877 to house 60 inmates. It was demolished in 1941.
