The parish of Llanllwchaiarn lies along the north bank of the river Severn opposite Newtown. As well as this stretch of countryside it includes the industrial part of the town of Newtown.
The government report which published the 1841 figures said that the increase in population since 1841 was due to new houses being built. Many of these would have been to house the workers for the growing flannel industry. This 1841 figure also included 55 soldiers and 11 others in a temporary barracks. These soldiers had been brought into the area to deal with disturbances following the Chartist riots in Llanidloes.
