The parish of Llabrynmair is a huge upland area. In Victorian times there would have been many poorer families struggling to make a living in this harsh landscape.
The 1841 census report said that six people emigrated from just one part of the parish over a period of a few weeks. Later census reports said that the population of Llanbrynmair increased as people came in to the area to build the Cambrian railway but then declined when the project was finished
