Victorian school days
Free coal at last for schools
Things became a little easier for poor families after 1891, when a new Act of Parliament put an end to the the system of having to pay for coal for the school fire.
This entry is from the School Log Book of Manafon School for December 1891...
Precludes - excludes, or no longer allows.
18th December
School diary entry "The Managers are reminded that Section 3 of the Elementary Education Act of 1891, precludes their charging the scholars in future for fuel".

Many schools tried to save on the cost of fuel by not lighting fires until they had to. The head teacher at Manafon School in 1875 had to be told to use the fire when it was cold and not just go by the date on the calendar !

9th November
School diary entry "Fires should be lighted according to the thermometer, not by the Almanack".

This School Inspector's instruction was copied into the Log Book and signed by the School Manager.
