Many
of these entries are typical of those for rural areas
where farming is
the most important occupation. Seed merchants and
millers have important roles to play at each end of the process.
The seed is bought by the farmer and planted in prepared ground, and the
harvested crop is then sent to the mill to be ground for flour.
Compare
the entries in Sutton's Directory with those in Pigot's Directory.
Can you find any tradesmen who are still working?
Look for tradesmen with the same surname. Businesses were often passed
from father to son.
