A sack full of fowls

Mary Jones found her hens being sold at market by John Mountford of Churchstoke. She fetched a policeman who then questioned Mr Mountford. His statement was also recorded. Mr Mountford told the police that he and his mother often bought poultry from farmers and local people to sell at market.

His statement continues:
"About eleven or twelve o'clock this day the prisoner came to the King's Head and enquired if I bought fowls - I replied that I did. I saw some fowls in a basket covered by a handkerchief on the horse block."
Mr Mountford bought the hens from Richard Powell and was in the act of selling them when Mary Jones came along and recognised them...
