Builth and district

A Victorian view of the High Street

This view is taken from an old engraving of the High Street in Builth Wells in Victorian times.
The date of the picture is uncertain, but is probably from around 1885. The scene is looking eastwards along High Street from the junction with West Street, and visitors to the town who had probably come to 'take the waters' are shown parading in the fashions of the time.

Like many other old market towns in mid-Wales, the scene today is still easily recognisable when compared with old engravings and with early photographs.
Many of the buildings can be seen to be little changed if you look above the modern shopfronts !
